1. Oh, the tradition, the customs…
If you ever heard about the Balkan region or talked with someone who travelled around the region, then you have heard about the famous Balkan hospitality. We are really proud of the ways we treat the people that come from a village nearby, let alone people from faraway lands. They have a really special treatment.
2. Guests over locals
For instance, if you are having guests in your family house and your mom makes a cake and you want to try a piece, you would either get: a) hey kiddo, leave that! THAT’S FOR THE GUESTS! Or b) get out of my house momentarily, you touched the cake and THAT’S FOR THE GUESTS. Sounds funny, but it is actually.
3. What’s more important than money
Hospitality. If you would enter a bar/restaurant/hotel/coffee shop/house anywhere in the Balkans as a foreigner, as everywhere in the world, the first idea is to take your money. You are a tourist, you came to leave it here, but the second and more important idea: in every corner of the Balkans the owner or the staff would do everything, so you get the best for your money and leave with tales to tell and a giant smile on your face. Not because we HAVE TO or SHOULD, but because it’s in our genes to be best in everything, pretend to be best at everything and thrive to achieve the best.
And this does not change if you are in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, or anywhere in the Balkan region (although you could hear some people complaining about Slovenians, but that’s more about teasing them because they are the only achieving country in ex-Yugoslavia).
4. The conclusion?
It is in our genes to give more to someone else then to our own. Why? That is probably a question too hard to answer in a couple of paragraphs. The best idea is to come and create your own picture about it, as many people already have while they travelled around the Balkans.
